Looking forward to some post Christmas down time? Want to forget the winter blues? Then why not come along to the Fenland Visual Arts Collective Art Day being hosted by Rob Morris (Chair) at his studio at Allens Yard, Chatteris, PE16 6LQ on Tuesday, 29th December from 11am. Everyone is welcome to come along with some artwork to show and tell, work on some art or just to have a chat and enjoy meeting fellow members. Please bring some food along! A reminder that FenVAC member, Richard Allen, currently has an exhibition of his landscape oil paintings at The Exchange Gallery in Saffron Walden Library, 2 King Street, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB10 1ES. The exhibition runs until Sunday, 6th December so still time to visit. The gallery is open from 9am til 7pm on weekdays, 9am til 5pm on Saturday and 1pm til 4pm on Sunday. The Gables Open Studios

After the success of the Christmas Open Studios event at the weekend the artists who exhibited at The Gables venue in Chatteris have decided to leave their displays up until Christmas. Organiser, Helen Free, invites any other interested FenVAC artists to join them and add their work to the exhibition. All work must be individually priced and labelled as staff at The Gables will be dealing with sales. There is a 10% commission rate on sales which will go towards the resident's entertainment fund. Exhibiting Opportunity

Skylark Cafe have agreed to display artwork from members of Fenvac on a continual basis with the work being changed (unless sold) every 3 months or so. There are spaces for about 12 pieces at the moment and the owners would like work suitable for the rural atmosphere of the cafe/garden centre/farm area. I would therefore suggest work depicting rural landscape scenes, plants and flowers etc.

As with all opportunities of this type it is the responsibility of the artist to arrange any insurance for the work that they wish. Fenvac insurance only covers 3rd party public liability and neither Fenvac nor Skylark will accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the work.

There is no commission to be paid on any sales and no hanging fees. It is advisable as this is a cafe area that all work be behind glass and must be properly strung for hanging. Clip frames are not acceptable.

The first hanging will be made in about a week so anyone wishing to take part should email me at robertwmorris@btopenworld.com with details and sizes of the artwork as soon as possible. The spaces will be shared out between those that reply by Friday 13 November.

Forthcoming Events

We have two forthcoming art days that all members and their families are invited to:

On Saturday, 7th November we are having an art day at Meeks Cemetery, New Road, Chatteris from 11am til 2pm. Come along to this lovely cemetery with abundant wildlife to draw, paint, photograph etc. Everyone welcome for as little or as long a time as you prefer. Depending on weather, warm clothes and hot drinks advisable! ;o) The nearest postcode to the cemetery, for those of you who don't know Chatteris, is PE16 6EX.

As a little respite from the festive celebrations our chair, Rob Morris, is hosting an art day at his studio at Allens Yard, Chatteris, PE16 6LQ on Tuesday, 29th December from 11am onwards. Come along and do/show some art or just to chat, eat and socialise! ;o) Please bring along some food to contribute. Everyone welcome!

Christmas Open Studios

If you haven't already, now's the time to sign up for the FenVAC Christmas Open Studios event! Over the Christmas lights switch on weekends of 27th - 29th November (Chatteris & March) and 5th/6th December (Wisbech) we have the opportunity to open our studios (or alternative venues) to exhibit our work and share what we do. It's a great opportunity to get our work seen and maybe make a few pre Christmas sales too!Participating members can open on either or both weekends, this may depend on your location. If you don't have a studio to open we do have two potential venues (one in Chatteris and one in March) where several artists could share the space. Please contact Marian if you are interested in participating.

Printmaking Workshops

FenVAC member, Fiona Dodwell, is holding some printmaking workshops in Whittlesey over several forthcoming weekends. Here are all the details from Fiona:

I am holding Japanese woodblock printmaking workshops at my home in Whittlesey with professional woodblock printmaker and printmaking teacher Jude Lockie. Her work can be viewed at http://www.judithlockie.co.uk/. I have been on courses with her at Suffolk College and Gainsborough's House and can vouch for them being fun and inspiring. Woodblock printmaking is something that you do not need any special equipment for and it can be done on the kitchen table. It is highly portable as you do not need a press. Inks are water-based so easy to use (and wash off). A simple and effective way of making and reproducing your own art.

The workshops are run on a non-profit-making basis (any excess arising goes to providing free places or is donated to Amnesty International) and cost £60 per person for two full weekend days. Tools and inks are brought by Jude for use by participants, and inexpensive woodblocks and paper are sold at cost price. Everyone brings food to share at lunchtime; tea coffee, biccies and hot soup / rolls are provided.

9-10 January

20-21 February

10-11 April

FenVAC member, Carol Oldfield, is currently having an exhibition of her work at the Angles Theatre, Alexandra Road, Wisbech. It is her first solo exhibition and runs until 30th October. The work is displayed in the bar and can be viewed 10 - 6 Monday to Friday and 10 - 12 Saturday plus any time they have a show on. Carol invites FenVAC members to join her for the opening reception on the evening of Sunday, 11th October from 6pm til 8pm with wine & nibbles. If you can't make it to the exhibition have a look at Carol's lovely animal portrait work on her website.

FenVAC are members of the Fenland Council for Voluntary service and we have had details of their forthcoming AGM. If any FenVAC members would like to attend the meeting it will be held on Tuesday, 29th September at 12.30pm at The Skoulding suite, March Town Hall, Market Place, March, PE15 9JF. Light refreshments will be available. After the meeting guest speaker, Dan Horn, Head of Housing and Neighbourhood Services from Fenland District Council, will give a presentation on the Neighbourhood Engagement Strategy being introduced in fenland.

There will be plants, drinks and strawberries & cream on sale. Almost everything will be 50p or 2 for 50p, to raise funds for Amnesty International.

Rob Morris and Marian Savill are continuing their series of local exhibitions with one entitled 'Cos Dads are Special starting on Monday. The exhibition is at March Library, City Road, March and runs until Saturday, 20th June during normal library opening hours. There will be a variety of unique work on display including assemblage, photography and jewellery in celebration of Fathers Day. Rob and Marian will be at the library on Tuesday, 9th June from 6.30pm - 8.30pm and everyone is welcome to go along to meet them, have a chat, see their work and enjoy light refreshments.

Fen Edge Textiles Exhibition

FenVAC committee member, Jenny Furlong, is part of the Fen Edge Textiles group who are having an exhibition at the National Trust property, Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk during June. The exhibition runs from 6th June to 21st June 2009 from 10.30am to 5pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Much of the textile work is based on artefacts found at Sutton Hoo. If Jenny's glorious work (see below for one of her previous pieces) is anything to go by the exhibition is well worth a visit! ;o)

Member's Skills/Services

It has been suggested recently that FenVAC members could help each other out in many ways and I believe this is a great idea. ;o) Our membership is comprised of all manner of folk with a huge variety of different skills/talents and in these times of economic recession helping each other out seems a beneficial thing to do.

To start the ball rolling, Rob Morris is offering FenVAC members a 10% discount on any photographic requirements. Rob has recently taken the plunge and is now working full time as a photographer/visual artist. He works on a huge variety of projects from portraits, weddings and other celebratory events through to magazine work, charity projects and visual art for regular exhibitions.

Norfolk Open Studios

Norfolk Open Studios begins this weekend and runs until 31st May. The event is part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and features over 250 participating venues with individual artists as well as galleries/collectives of artists. Manea Gala

This year's Manea Gala is on Saturday, 11th July on Manea Playing Field from 12 noon til 5 or 6pm. There is an art & craft tent and FenVAC member, Sabrina Woodard, has asked if any FenVAC members would like to go along and display/sell their work. Individual tables cost £10 but can be shared. There is limited display board space available but exhibitors can take their own boards if they have them. Set up is from 10am on the day. Wisbech Rose Fair

The organisers of the Wisbech Rose Fair have asked if FenVAC members would be interested in participating with the events in Museum Square again this year. The Fair runs from Wednesday, 1st July to Saturday, 4th July. You don't have to commit to everyday, not even a whole day, just a few hours would be great. Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NCH Foundation Trust and The Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation for arts and mental health (Arts and Minds) are seeking expressions of interest from visual artists/designers for an imaginative piece of public artwork at The new mental health unit at The Cavell Centre, Bretton, Peterborough.

The Cavell Centre is a new purpose built unit that brings together mental health and learning disabilities in Peterborough. Phase 1 of the unit opened on the 26th November 2008 for older adults. Phase 2 of the build is due for completion May 2009 when acute adult and learning disabilities services move in.

Brief
Proposals are invited from artists to design a decorative clock to be situated in the reception area at the Cavell Centre, Bretton. The design will reflect the following themes: openness, new growth, new beginnings well-being and hopefulness. Arrangements will be made for artists to visit the unit during March 2009.

We have received some information regarding artwork for The Cavell Centre in Peterborough which members may be interested in. Below is a brief for a new piece of public artwork for the centre.

The centre is also seeking to display local artists' work at the centre. The work would be displayed on a rotation basis with artists loaning the work for an agreed period of time.
